Research Programmes
Sustainable Development and Land Question
The main purpose of the programme is to initiate national and regional dialogue with Africa-based networks. The project presents the land question through consideration of the salient historical continuities that have made the resolution of the question complex and elusive. It is argued that accessing land is critical for rural livelihoods in Africa yet land inequality and the accompanying land tenure problems have contributed to the declining state of rural livelihoods. The various resources from this project were used to make inputs at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg , August 2002, at various policy advocacy forums in various countries and regions, and in providing advice to key civil society organisations, some national governments and a few regional organisations (SADC, Landnet, SALN, etc). The expected outputs from this project are country papers ( Botswana , Kenya , Malawi , Mozambique , South Africa and Zimbabwe ) and four overview papers (Africa-wide, East Africa, Southern Africa and West Africa).
