Agrarian Labour Questions
Although, farm workers form the largest stratum of the working class in most African countries, their needs have been low on the development agenda for various reasons. They lack a coherent voice and are poorly organised because of the spatial dispersion of farms. This research programme will examine the performance of agrarian labour markets in various African countries, encompassing: the organisation of labour, and conditions of service (wages, benefits, labour relations); social issues (HIV/AIDS, food insecurity, access to health and education etc.) affecting farm workers; and the role of agrarian labour in rural markets in terms of consumption, demand and supply patterns of agricultural and non-agricultural products and the creation of non-farm rural employment. In addition, the programme will assess the impact of land reforms on the agrarian labour markets and land rights of farm workers, especially in countries such as Zimbabwe , South Africa and Namibia .
